A traveling salesman saw the fallen creature, it having expired by the roadway. The man stopped. Humans act within the convergence of multiple, intertwining motives and opportunities. The man halted his caravan for many reasons, including but not limited to the following:

He felt compassion. His knees hurt. He retained a sentimental memory from boyhood of a jackass on his father's farm. He noticed a suitable camping spot. His prostate clamored for him to urinate. He nursed an unconscious urge to expiate mild guilt generated by a recent argument with his wife during which he had spoken harshly. The dead animal wore a salvageable harness.

Add to the above a career imperative: “The farmer who owned that jackass is a prospect for my goods.” And a breeding imperative: “The farmer might have a pretty daughter.”

Hosea 12:7 — He is a merchant, the balances of deceit are in his hand.
