The son immediately hung a fancy tailor’s sign out front of the cottage, built a pretty fence, and filled the house to bursting with new furniture. He bought expensive cloth for himself and used his skills to stitch handsome garments. 
He thought about putting a portion in the cathedral poor-box, but instead bought earrings for his sweetheart and fine new boots for her father. 

Soon the old man consented to a wedding, and the bride moved in with the Tailor and the Widow.

Five dreadful years passed.
